Canterbury Bears was founded in 1979 by Modern British painter John Blackburn and almost 40 years later, his wife Maude and daughter Kerstin still head up the family business. Together with a truly dedicated team they design and create beautiful hand-made English bears in workshops situated in a small village close to the historic Cathedral City of Canterbury in Kent. All bears and animals are 100% designed and handmade in England. In 1987 Canterbury Bears were granted the privilege of using the City of Canterbury coat of arms as their logo; this ancient marque is registered by the Garter King of Arms and dates from the 11th Century.

All Canterbury Bears and animals are hand-made using carefully sourced fabrics from the Uk wherever possible: hand-blown glass eyes made by artisans in the Midlands, and wool, tweed and tartans from weavers in Yorkshire and Scotland. Jointed animals are created using sustainably-sourced English wood. Polyester filling is used as a soft, light and hygienic material made from 100% recycled materials.
