Lali was created in 2015 by designer Kinnari McDevitt and means little darling in Hindi. Kinnari spent her childhood in India, where there was an honest connection to how one's clothing is made. Her mother taught her how to source fabrics from the textile market which would then be tailored into garments that fit her lifestyle - airy cotton voiles for sweltering summer days, sturdy linens for riding bikes and climbing fences, and raw silks for wedding celebrations. From this experience, the idea of Lali's own special collection of clothing grew.
The Lali studio in the States is a collective of talented women of notably different backgrounds, collaborating to bring each collection to life, and nourishing each other in work and aspirations. For manufacturing, Lali work continuously with the same Fairtrade certified companies each season, and are proud to be a part of a community of printers, weavers, and makers. Using traditional hand-looming and block printing techniques artisans weave and print Kinnari's exclusive fabric designs - just enough for each season's collection so that nothing goes to waste. Any scraps are recycled into accessories with the aim to produce in an ethical and sustainable way.
Each Lali collection is inspired by the exploration of a child’s physical and emotional world. Prints and patterns aim to foster the curiosity, spirit and adventures of children, and the secret world they explore when no one is watching. The dreamy aesthetic of Lali is always present, whether in special embroideries, block-prints or hand-woven fabrics, but most importantly is also practical and comfortable allowing the child to fully enjoy these special pieces and cultivate discerning tastes from an early age.
